Over the weekend, Apple approved Cyan's new Myst for iPhone release for sale in the iTunes App Store.

The application uses the full 24-bit imagery from the original renders of the game, as well as the full-length music and audio cues, which were truncated in the Myst Masterpiece Edition release. As such, it's the largest release of Myst ever, and arguably the most complete and detailed version of the original game ever assembled.

The application weighs in at an incredible 727 MB, and takes a long time to sync to your device - it may appear that iTunes has locked up, but be patient, the progress bar just isn't very informative. Installation to the iPhone or iPod Touch requires 1.5 GB of free space due to the installation process, but the additional space is freed up again after installation is complete. The game also requires the latest version of the iPhone OS, 2.2.1. Myst for iPhone supports and runs well on all of Apple's touchscreen devices: the 1st and 2nd Generation iPod Touch, the original iPhone, and the iPhone 3G.

Myst is $5.99 in the iTunes App Store. You can buy it using the following link: [ Myst for iPhone (Opens iTunes) ]

News blurb over, commence product endorsement wink.gif.

I picked this up yesterday afternoon, and it's just flat-out incredible. It looks great, it sounds great, and it gives you the opportunity to finally touch a Linking Book with your hand. You can bet I took full advantage of that wink.gif.

Kudos to Sunsoft for having the idea to port the game to the iPhone, and double kudos to Cyan for keeping this one in-house. I've seen a lot of ambivalent and even flat-out negative reviews of Myst on other platforms, like the DS, deriding it for poor quality. This is nothing like those ports. The images are bright and crisp (the widescreen format of the display is a perfect fit here), the audio is rich (or as rich as the original 1993 recordings will allow... the hiss in the intro video is still there, for instance), and the controls are dead simple, very responsive, and very accurate. It's quite intuitive to tap to move forward, or swipe to turn left/right, and the auto-zoom makes tapping small objects like the buttons on the compass rose in Stoneship a lot easier.

Also, kudos to Apple for letting a 727 MB app into the app store. That's honestly where I was most worried that this whole thing would fall down, and I'm glad it hasn't been arbitrarily blocked on account of its size. It's worth it, and I really hope it brings in not just the old guard, but a whole bunch of new folks as well. For $6, it's not just a steal, it's outright felony theft. wink.gif
