Not quite Cyan news, but since there isn't a Riven news category...
In a message to Chuker at Mc, Robyn included a link to a very old development map drawn for Riven. Here's his message:
QUOTE
I just posted one of our earliest Riven design maps on my
Tinselman
blog. The maps were all very large: about 3 x 4 feet. This one
included all five of the Riven island on one large sheet, though most
of the later maps were detailed drawings of specific islands.
This map is dated 5/6/94. As you can tell, it's barely similar to the
final Riven game. We went through an evolution of these things...
drawing and redrawing. Somehow I ended up with all of them and I'll
try and get more up on Tinselman in the future.
Warning: The XL size scan is very, very large and may take awhile to
load. But it's fun to scroll all around it and read the little notes.
The scan can be found
here in three different sizes. I agree with Robyn, the XL-sized scan is incredibly large, but it is indeed fun to scroll around and examine the details in it. Robyn later posted at Mc that he'd love to put more of the Riven development maps up on his blog in the future, so stay tuned.
For those interested, he also posted the
Myst Game Design document a while back.
