Other...

It was (I think) 1995, and I was visiting a friend for a few days...she had a mac computer and was showing me a game called Myst. It looked interesting, but I didn't think much of it since I didn't have a computer at the time. Fast forward about six years...was shopping for a b-day gift for another friend (who owned a PC), at Walmart...saw the game Myst, and got it for her (still not really knowing anything about the game). She loved it, and loaned it to me to try (after I got my first desktop system). blankstare.gif I was hooked! I ended up buying Riven and Exile and played those within a couple of months. biggrin.gif

The same does go for me. Only I forgot what the title was for about four years before seeing it in a store somewhere, and the fact that I always wanted it.

I think I was 10 at the time (1998) and I was part of a day-care thing, which was just a normal house, where I went there after school til my mom picked me up. The head lady had myst installed on a packard bell and that was when I first tinkered around in myst. When myst was completed it was about time for me to stop attending day-care. Then she told mde about the next game called Riven and I never got to play it for so long until about last year when I bought the whole myst series box set and loved every minute of it. biggrin.gif

My initial exposure to Myst is similar to Fall's. I passed through Vancouver BC in the early 1990's on the way to Alaska with friends and we stayed several nights with another friend. He and his young son were playing Myst (on a Mac I believe) and we fooled with it for a few hours, but as we were on a real world adventure I soon forgot about it. It was only after I bought Exile, after seeing in on a store shelf while looking for another game, that I finally decided to renew my Myst adventure.

It was about 1999 at my grandmother's house in CA. I was rooting through her CDs and found Myst. Apparently her friend hadn't gotten very far into it (lto the imager, I think) and had abandoned it. My dad took it home with us, made a copy, and the rest is history. I played it two days straight (with cheats on the Web) and I've been hooked ever since...

As of this moment, that copy's the only thing of the Myst series that I've got. I'm plotting on getting that "Ages of Myst" pack, though. *smiles happily at thought of playing Riven*

When my Dad told me about this game where you travel to different "ages" and try to solve puzzles, etc. I thought, "This sounds really stupid..." He bought it for me for Xmas one year (I was probably 12 or so) and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't until I read the BOA that I became a Myst nut... Couldn't wait for the next thing ever again (Riven, BOT, BOD, Exile, etc.)

To think I could have missed the whole thing... wow.

I was browsing the shelves of our local "Staples" store and saw myst. It looked interesting, so I bought it. I ran around lost as to what to do, but reallllly wanted to figure it out. The very next month, I found Riven on the shelf with a "walkthru book" attached. hahaha, Now I can figure out this game. Riven tho, didn't work too well on my Old 386, so I decided that my Business needed an upgraded computer. I built it, and really played Riven. Wow, what a game. I was totally hooked. I wanted Exile when it came out, so my wife bought it for me. I also upgraded my puter from a p1 to a p4 at the same time. Now this little new puter had an extra link on the desktop. It was to the Exile forum. Hmmph. Now they tell me where to ask.
I'm playing Until Uru now, and will be playing Revelation when I can get it. smile.gif

other- my brother gave it to my mom as a gift (around1998) and I started playing it. I was only 7 so I played it and explored and I thought it was fun to just walk around and stuff. It was funny because whenever it was night and the sky turned purple I would get really scared and messed with the clock until it was light again. A couple of years later I learned that my friend also had the game so we started playing it and fell in love with it. And here I am...

My mother bought it as a Christmas present because she thought it looked interesting. We spent fifteen minutes trying to figure out how to play the game and then gave up. blush.gif

Then my younger brother found the game, downloaded a FAQ, and managed to get through it. After watching him, I played through the game myself and the storyline ended up sucking me in.

it was late 1997, i'd just bought my first computer and went out to get a good game to play. myst looked interesting - puzzles rather than a shoot-em-up (already had doom, anyhoo) AND it was on sale, so i bought it.

loved it!!! heard about riven and got that as soon as i could when it came out.

I think I got an original one for you...

My GRANDFATHER bought it and was playing it, and so one day I was watching him, and he started me up a new game...I have been hooked and obsessed ever since...and that was back in 1993!

Actually, I really did find it in New Mexico!

I lived in New Mexico for about 4 years (my parents still live there) and my brother came over to visit. He brought the original Myst over for my mother. She's pretty much afraid of using the computer and really afraid of video games, thinking that they are all too fast and loud for her to really be able to handle. He thought that Myst would be perfect for her smile.gif

As it turns out, I nicked her copy (after she got to play it of course). I've been hooked ever since.

Well its a long sotry for me but here goes.

When I was about 9, I remember my dad playing on a laptop, and I was like what are you playing, he is like well I don't know the name, but come check it out. It was Myst, and he was in the cabin trying every possible combination to open the safe. blankstare.gif I said, you know the combination is probably somewhere. He's like yea I know that I just can't find it. Well eventually he opened it. And me and mom tried to figure it out, butr after a while I went back to playing sonic cuz I couldn't make heads or tails of anything.

fast foward about two years later. I was at a friends house and she was like hey lets try out this game my brother got called riven. So we start it up, and mess around a bit, and she is like I wonder whats off the side of this cliff. She looks over the side and sees the guard just lieing there. She screams, and I fall out of my chair rolling with laughter. biggrin.gif Needless to say she shut the game off. I was like I have to get that game just to annoy you. but I didn't get it then either.

Then one day I read a article for Exile in a Explore! magizine (They are cancled now.) for Exile. I was like yea I remember that game! So about a week later we went to Sams and there was Exile on the shelf. I bought it and loved it so much. I was gonna get the other two, and bumped into the trilogy many times, but I am a dihard cheepskate, and I was waiting for the price to drop. Then I heard about Uru. Well I got the demo, and it didn't work on any of our computers!! So Iv decided I was gonna play this game, so I built my own computer so I could play it! (And also play JO on it too.(I love Lucas Arts games!)) I built it in september, and bought Uru a couple of weeks later. It also came with the 10th aniversary set free. So I was like YES! all the way home! biggrin.gif

So then Revelations came out and I had preordered it for $40 (I still can't believe I shelled out that much money for it! angry.gif ). I also have preordered the US SE of End of Ages. Cuz I really wanted the soundtrack, and the documentarie. (Besides it was only 10 bucks more for about $40 worth of more stuff.)

and tttttttttttttttttttthats all folks!!!!! biggrin.gif

Like joclyn I had purchased my first computer, (I kept telling myself I didn't need a computer, but that's another story), I went to a local computer store (no longer in business) and happened to see a good deal on a 3 pack of games. Well Myst was one of the games, I gave the other 2 away. I have played the games since and have enjoyed them all. I thought I'd wear out the computer changing discs in Riven over and over again, but it held up. I now have the dvds for each.
I have been through a couple of computers, but now have all of the games. I think I have 3 ready to play at any time, but my all time favorite is Uru Ages Beyond Myst and Until Uru is the best thing to happen to me!!
I have also preorded EOA SE, I'm hoping it to be as good or better than the others.

Natika

ps, I'm very sad about Cyan! I'm hoping the end has not been written for them!

Hello all--first time poster, long time lurker...

I read about Myst in a newspaper column by Jon Carroll (S.F. Chronicle) years ago. His descriptions of the game intrigued me--and I didn't even own a computer!

When I finally got my first computer, you better bet Myst was amongst my first software purchases.

Other, I don't think anyone else put this smile.gif

I was looking in PC World (my parents were looking for printer cartridges and I was looking at games because I was bored). I saw this game, URU, and decided to give it a go as it sounded interesting. It turned out that I was hooked, but didn't really understand the storyline, so I decided to get Myst and start from the beginning.......

I'm now on Riven, and I've got Exile lined up waiting, and Revelation and EoA are soon to be bought (as soon as I can convince my parents that they really do want to buy them for me) biggrin.gif

I put "friend gave away" but I should have voted "other."

My sister got the game sometime back in the '90s. She didn't play it too much, though. I played it a lot, and eventually beat it. I consider the game mine now, as I am holding on to it. So that is close to "a friend gave it away."

But I was soooo tempted to put the one about "took a walk in New Mexico and found this book..." biggrin.gif

I first saw it when I was at my grandma's. My cousin was playing it, and was having a problem in the maze on the Selenetic Age. So he let me play for awhile, and I got hooked.
