The wooden platform on Myst was one of the first permanent structures built on the island (taken from Atrus's sketches), and for good reason. A dock would simplify both fishing--an important activity, given the lack of edible plants or animals on Myst itself--and maritime travel. As the account of his time on Age 37 demonstrates, it would not be out of character for Atrus to explore beyond the horizon of his new home.

The dock is also a particularly iconic landmark on Myst, as it serves as one of Age's link-in points. It also houses the Sunken Ship, the access door to the underground Dimensional Imager, and one of island's Marker Switches.
