I read that while trapped on Riven Gehn became obsessed with vaht (five), but why did Riven conveniently break up into five islands instead of four or six?

('game world' and real word answers would be nice.)

Perhaps that's why he got obsessed with five? If riven had broken up into six he coulda got obsessed with six instead! blankstare.gif

no, he was obsessed with five because that number was significant for the D'ni.

Perhaps it was because Riven was broken up into 5 pieces that Gehn became obsessed with 5 more than ever. But why 5 pieces instead of 6 or 4? Let me put it this way: it was the will of the Maker! wink.gif

I'm not so sure that the D'ni were obsessed with the number five, but Gehn certainly was. So, his obsession may have affected his Writing. For example, Gehn himself was full of contradictions, as we saw in BoA, so it's no surprise that his Writing was full of contradictions, and his Ages were unstable because of that. I think a Writer's attitude can subconsciously affect the result of his Writing, so Gehn's 5th Age naturally linked to an Age where the instability also reflected the number five. There are many Ages of Riven in the Great Tree of Possibility, but Gehn could only Write one that would break into five pieces, instead of six or four, because of his obsession.

The D'ni were about as obsessed with the number 5 as we are with the number 10... it's an important number because it serves as one of the foundations of our number system. Gehn just took it way too far.

Then why won't you yanks go metric? Or, like Gehn, do you consider that taking things too far? wink.gif

There are at least SOME of us yanks who wish we WOULD go metric. smile.gif Some of us even like the ISO-standard date format (yyyy-mm-dd). And ferrets.

Another coincadense is that not only did riven break into 5 when gehn created it, but it was the 5th age that he wrote...and one of his main ages also.
maybe im just too obsessed, but another age that he wrote that was really important was 37. 3+7=10 10/2=5 5+2 takes us back to 7 and 5-2 takes us back to 3. huh? so the 2 main #s we used there were 5 & 2. well age 255- dont u hear about that one a lot?
-maybe im just trying to hard...but some things r just soo coinsadental(spelling check please!)

It's the 233rd one so when you say, "and 5-2 takes us back to 3." you could come up with the 233rd age I suppose blankstare.gif
