This timeline is divided into two sections: the Historical Timeline and the Modern Timeline. The Modern Timeline begins with the present-day discovery of D'ni by John Loftin in 1987, and uses Surface dating to ensure that everyone can tell what happened when. The Historical Timeline chronicles the events of the Myst series (minus End of Ages), as well as the 9400 years of history leading up to the Fall of D'ni, and uses D'ni dates broken into sections of 625 years each - or one D'ni century.
New events from the Cavern can be found at the very bottom of the page (just hit "End" on your keyboard to get there).

BE stands for Before Earth, and DE stands for D'ni Era.
3125 BE - 1 BE
625 BE - 1 BE
- 207 BE
- Ri'Neref is born
- 73 BE
- Ri'Neref dismissed from Ronay's Guild of Writers for refusing to Write an Age he considered questionable. Some records indicate he excused himself, though regardless, much of Ronay society considered this dismissal unfair, and some even called it "detrimental to society".
- 59 BE
- Garternay's eventual collapse is made public.
- 50 BE
- King Ailesh is born.
0 DE – 3124 DE
0 DE - 624 DE
- 0 DE
- Ri'Neref and several thousand followers petition the King of Ronay for permission to split from the rest of the Ronay evacuees.
- Surveyors in the D'ni Cavern establish a Zero mark and line, as was customary for Ronay Ages. This mark became known as the "Great Zero." A monument was erected on this spot. Construction along the line emanating from the Great Zero was reserved for holy buildings. Other construction along this line was prohibited without the King's permission.
- Ri'Neref and several thousand Ronay evacuees arrive in the Cavern.
- Ri'Neref coronated as the first King of D'ni.
- 8 DE
- Leevot 9 (September 27, 7649 BCE) - The D'ni Guild of Writers is founded. Ailesh, Ri'Neref's long-time apprentice, is made Grand Master.
- 48 DE
- Construction begins on the Temple of Yahvo.
- 63 DE
- The Temple of Yahvo is completed.
- 84 DE
- King Ri'Neref launches an initiative to build massive fans to circulate the air in the Cavern and expand the network of tunnels from the Surface bringing fresh air in.
- 100 DE
- Leenovoo 18 (April 8, 7556 BCE): The Day of the Circle. This day was set aside to celebrate the foundation of the 18 Major Guilds of D'ni, as well as a celebration of the New Guilds, which were seen as much "healthier" than their counterparts on Ronay, with emphasis on carrying out their duty to Yahvo and the D'ni people, rather than on inter-Guild competition. Guidelines were established concerning Guild facility construction to ensure this.
- 114 DE
- Installation of fans and construction of air shafts to supply them is completed. During the course of the construction (which began in 84 DE), several D'ni working on the project went missing. It is assumed that they remained on the surface to live.
- 120 DE
- King Ri'Neref dies at the age of 327.
- Ailesh, Ri'Neref's apprentice, takes the throne at the age of 170.
- 233 DE
- Leefo 12: Completion of the first Common Library of D'ni.
- 256 DE
- King Ailesh's third son, Shomat, is born.
- 300 DE
- King Ailesh dies of natural causes at the age of 350.
- Shomat takes the throne at the age of 44. Shomat, who had previously been a member of the Guild of Writers, continued to receive private instruction in The Art after his coronation, which some attribute to his distorted view of the practice later in his reign.
- 347 DE
- Construction of King Shomat's Palace is complete. He and his family moved in, though his older brothers refused to. The palace's lavishness, as well as Shomat's belief that Ages served the D'ni, contrary to King Ri'Neref's statements, began to create a growing tension in the D'ni culture.
- 387 DE
- King Shomat's brothers disappear and are never seen again. Rumors abound that Shomat had them killed, or made to use a "Death Book", but they were never proven.
- 400 DE
- King Shomat is assigned a prophetess to try and reign in the King, who some believe had gone mad by this time. Her efforts seem to have been successful, as the remaining 155 years of Shomat's reign showed a marked improvement over his first 100. The assignment sparked a tradition which lasted until the end of the reign of Kings, with each King after Shomat being appointed a prophetess at the beginning of their reign.
- 475 DE
- King Ja'kreen is born.
- 555 DE
- King Shomat dies of natural causes at the age of 299.
- Ja'kreen, a Guild Master in the Guild of Stone Masons, takes the throne at age 80. He was not related to King Shomat, but rather the son of one of Shomat's close friends. He was given the throne because Shomat's own children were "out of control."
- 598 DE
- King Ja'kreen commissions the rebuilding of the King's Arch (later known as Kerath's Arch). Design of the Arch was headed by Guild Master Koris of the Guild of Stone Masons.
- 600 DE
- Construction begins on the King's Arch.
625 DE - 1249 DE
- 625 DE
- Turn of the first D'ni century.
- Construction of the King's Arch is completed.
- 643 DE
- Construction of the Temple of the Great King is completed. King Ja'kreen ensured that the building conformed exactly to the design specifications laid out in the Regeltavok Oorpah. Its construction drew criticism for its apparently exorbitant dimensions.
- 654 DE
- King Ja'kreen's wife gives birth to their first son, J'Taeri.
- 664 DE
- J'Taeri, King Ja'kreen's first son, dies of an unspecified and apparently rare disease.
- 674 DE
- King Ja'kreen's wife dies at a young age.
- 700 DE
- King Ja'kreen marries his second wife.
- 717 DE
- King Ja'kreen's second wife gives birth to a son, Veesha.
- 775 DE
- King Ja'kreen commissions additional private construction on Ae'Gura, including the J'Taeri district, which he named in memory of his first son, who died at age 10, 111 years earlier.
- 812 DE
- King Ja'kreen dies of natural causes at the age of 337. It was often said he died a very sad and unsatisfied man.
- Veesha takes the throne at the age of 95.
- 924 DE
- King Mararon is born.
- 974 DE
- King Veesha's fifth son, Mararon, is nearly killed on a routine check of Ages as part of his duties as a Maintainer. He falls into a coma which Healers said he would never come out of.
- 977 DE
- Mararon emerges from a three year coma, much to the surprise of many in D'ni. His father, King Veesha, is convinced that his faith in Yahvo brought about the rebirth of his son.
- 997 DE
- King Veesha dies of natural causes at the age of 280.
- Mararon, Veesha's fifth son, takes the throne at the age of 73, exactly 20 years after he miraculously emerged from a three year coma.
- 1109 DE
- King Koreen is born.
- 1124 DE
- King Mararon began major revamping of the D'ni educational system. Following the suggestions laid out in a paper by Ti'Lanar (Guild Master in the Guild of Legislators), Mararon put the Common Schools under the Guild of Legislators, instituted higher standards for instructors, and lengthened the school day. The time spent in the Common Schools was also raised from 6 years (age 10 to 16) to 15 years (age 5 to 20).
- Mararon also institutes several new "Minor Guilds," including Architecture, Miners, Bankers, and Educators, into which graduates of the new Common Schools system could enter.
- 1159 DE
- King Mararon dies of natural causes at the relatively early age of 235. Some speculate that this was a result of Mararon's decision to live his life to the fullest by experimenting with drugs and other substances.
- Koreen, the oldest of Mararon's two sons, took the throne at the age of 50.
1250 DE - 1874 DE
- 1303 DE
- A Writer mysteriously left the Guild of Writers, followed shortly by the theft of Books and Ink from the halls of the respective Guilds. Unbeknownst to King Koreen and the other D'ni at the time, this was the beginning of a plot by the Judges of Yahvo which would lead to the Pento War.
- 1320 DE
- The Judges of Yahvo, who had been writing illegal Ages in an effort to develop a race of warriors that they could control, saw their efforts come to fruition this year with the completion of the Pento Age.
- 1323 DE
- Beginning of the Pento War.
- Leevot 12: The Pento, led by the Judges of Yahvo, invaded D'ni. They stormed the Palace as King Koreen's wife was about to give birth. His wife and family escaped through the King's Arch to the safety of a secure Linking Book. It is said that while passing under the Arch, Koreen's wife gave birth to their first son, Ahlsendar.
- Koreen remained in the city, separated from his family, who were safe on a Private Age. He poured money into the City Guard and the D'ni's small military, though it seemed too little too late.
- 1352 DE
- King Koreen is assassinated by a group of Pento warriors, led by the Judges of Yahvo.
- Ahlsendar, now 29, remains in hiding on his family's Private Age and plans how to overthrow the Pento from safety, apparently at the suggestion of his uncle.
- The Judges of Yahvo claim control of the D'ni government following the assassination of King Koreen.
- The Pento, led by the Judges of Yahvo, begin moving their forces into other Ages inhabited by the D'ni.
- Several weeks after the expansion of the Judges' campaign into other D'ni Ages, the Judges kill the leader of the Pento, fearing that he was becoming too powerful and difficult to control. The Pento quickly fell into disarray as his two sons scrambled to take control of the throne.
- Fifteen weeks after his father's death, Ahlsendar returns to D'ni, knowing that the Pento would be in disarray and the Judges of Yahvo would be vulnerable.
- 13?? DE
- Ahlsendar allies himself with the Pento warrior Mekarr, and agreed to help him defeat his brother if he left D'ni and returned home peacefully. Ahlsendar also agrees to write a new Age for the Pento to live in.
- 1376 DE
- Ahlsendar leads a force into the Pento Age and, in the Battle of the Great King, defeated Makarr's brother, Timaue.
- The five leaders of the Judges of Yahvo are rounded up and linked into Prison Ages, and the Books burned.
- End of the Pento War.
- Ahlsendar is officially coronated as King of D'ni several weeks after the sentencing of the leaders of the Judges of Yahvo.
- 1423 DE
- King Solath is born.
- 1466 DE
- Mekarr enters the Palace through Books given to him by the Judges of Yahvo and kills King Ahlsendar's wife and two sons. Ahlsendar defeats Mekarr in what is described as an "astounding battle."
- Two days after the death of his family, Ahlsendar orders the release of a D'ni-developed plague into the new Pento homeworld. Within three days, the entire population of Pento was dead, along with many inhabitants of other Ages which the Pento were in contact with. The D'ni, unaware of Ahlsendar's participation in the development of the plague, blame the Pento for the devastation. The Guild of Chemists fears that the plague could mutate into something that could one day threaten D'ni.
- All Books to which the Pento had access are gathered together to be destroyed.
- 1500 DE
- King Ahlsendar gathers the D'ni together to "inform them of the truth." In his speech, he informs his people that he was responsible for the plague that was unleashed upon the Pento. At the end of his speech, he asks to be sealed within the Temple of the Great King, along with all infected Books and other Books linking D'ni to their past.
- 1501 DE
- King Ahlsendar is sealed within the Temple of the Great King.
- Solath, Ahlsendar's chosen heir, takes temporary control of D'ni while they awaited Ahlsendar's promised return.
- Six months after Ahlsendar was sealed in the Temple, Solath discovers the final wishes of Ahlsendar and reads them publicly. In the letter, Ahlsendar stated that he "... was not to return..." and "... for no reason should the seal on the Temple of the Great King ever be broken."
- Ahlsendar's final message to his people causes much dismay and disbelief, and while there are many calls to break the seal on the Temple, none are willing to defy the orders of the Great King.
- 1502 DE
- Leefo 23: The Temple of the Great King is renamed the Tomb of the Great King on orders from Solath.
- Solath, the son of the Grand Master of the Guild of Writers who had helped King Ahlsendar develop the plague unleashed upon the Pento, takes the throne (officially) at the age of 79, after ruling in Ahlsendar's stead for two years. A newly-designed crown is given to Solath, as Ahlsendar had kept his own in his entombment, and there was a common sentiment that its design should not be used again.
- 1520 DE
- Nemiya, the prophetess advisor to the Great King, denounces Ahlsendar in her book, The Book of Nemiya. The books calls Ahlsendar a fraud and an impostor, guilty of killing thousands of Age-dwellers and misleading and betraying his own people. The book sends D'ni into a religious upheaval, and generates considerable outrage, most notably from King Solath.
- 1527 DE
- Nemiya vanishes. Some claim she was killed by an angry mob for the content of her book, while others say she was taken away by angels.
- 1550 DE
- Public sentiment towards Nemiya's defamatory book about the Great King shifts, and many begin to see wisdom and truth in her writings.
- 1604 DE
- In an effort to distract his people from their growing religious crisis, King Solath announces plans for the civic district of Karim, including an opera house and concert hall.
- 1610 DE
- Construction on the civic district of Karim begins.
- 1650 DE
- Construction of the Karim district is finally completed after numerous delays and difficulties, much to the excitement of the people.
- 1735 DE
- King Solath's wife passes away, leaving him with two daughters. He soon remarries, taking a young woman named Jolatha as his wife, against the advise of his prophetess. Jolatha was an influential member of a cult known as The Tree, though Solath denies this to the day he dies.
- 1748 DE
- Jolatha gives birth to King Solath's first son, Me'erta.
- 1779 DE
- King Solath dies of natural causes at the age of 356.
- Me'erta takes the throne at the age of 31, much to the consternation of the Church and other religious leaders, who fear that his reign would further destabilize the D'ni's religious culture. Throughout Me'erta's reign, it would often be said that Jolatha did more of the ruling of D'ni than her son.
- 1817 DE
- King Me'erta proposes construction of the Temple of the Tree, the first time any King officially sanctioned anything other than the original beliefs of Ri'neref.
- Me'erta also suggests that the line of the Great Zero is inaccurate. Although he does not change the line, all of the religious structures built during his reign are aligned with his proposed redirection of the line.
- 1843 DE
- Construction of the Temple of the Tree is completed.
- 1871 DE
- King Gan is born.
1875 DE - 2499 DE
- 1876 DE
- Construction of another cult temple proposed by King Me'erta, the Temple of Water, is completed. Like the other religious structures erected during Me'erta's reign, it lies on his proposed alteration of the line of the Great Zero.
- 1902 DE
- Construction of another cult temple proposed by King Me'erta, the Temple of the Sacred Stone, is completed. Like the other religious structures erected during Me'erta's reign, it lies on his proposed alteration of the line of the Great Zero.
- 1975 DE
- Jolatha, through King Me'erta, attempts to alter the Oath of the Guild of Writers, in an effort to relax the restrictions placed on the Guild by Ri'neref and Ailesh. His proposal is met with staunch resistance by Grand Master Tremal. Following Tremal's mysterious death, the rest of the Guild of Writers rallies to to his cause and refuses to alter their Oath. Eventually, Jolatha concedes defeat.
- 1999 DE
- Jolatha breaks the seal on the Tomb of the Great King in the dead of night. Numerous possible motivations for this foolish act were proposed several years later, including her desire to obtain some of the Ancient Books held in the Tomb, as the Tree believed they had special power, and wanting to prove once and for all that the Great King was dead. Regardless of the motive, the seal is broken, and several Books are moved to the Temple of the Tree, along with what Jolatha claims was a piece of the Great King's robe.
- Two days after breaking into the Tomb of the Great King, Jolatha dies from an unknown illness. King Me'erta quietly has the stolen Books returned to the Tomb and has it re-sealed.
- 2014 DE
- King Me'erta dies at the age of 267 in the bed of one of his many lovers. Guild of Healers records indicate he had been given a massive dose of poison. Although his murderer was never found, there were several suspects, including his much-maligned wife, and his son Gan, who was ashamed of his father's weakness.
- Gan takes the throne at the age of 144.
- Six months after Gan's coronation, the first signs of the plague begin to show themselves.
- King Hemelin is born.
- 2050 DE
- Despite the severe drop in fertility rates caused by the plague, King Gan fathers a son, Benashiren. Many are blaming the plague on the Great King, as very few if any of the D'ni knew that Jolatha had broken into the Tomb.
- 2070 DE
- King Gan dies at the age of 199, having only ruled D'ni for 55 years (the shortest reign of any King).
- Behnashiren takes the throne at the age of 20 (the youngest coronation in history).
- 2193 DE
- King Behnashiren dies at the age of 143, leaving no heirs. He leaves the throne to his 179-year-old uncle. Perhaps because of the immaturity of his actions during his reign, it is later said that a higher power had intervened in his decision.
- Hemelin takes the throne at the age of 179, and immediately begins looking for a cure for the plague which his nephew had ignored for 123 years.
- 2255 DE
- King Hemelin becomes gravely ill.
- 2260 DE
- King Hemelin recovers from the plague with the care and assistance of a woman named Lalen, becoming one of the lucky 5% of D'ni who managed to survive it once infected.
- 2262 DE
- Leevobro 12: Lalen, after making full use of the resources available to her because of her relationship with the King, uncovers the location of the Book of Birenni.
- Leevobro 12: King Hemelin and Lalen are married in a grand ceremony.

- King Naygen praises his people for being able to express "their true feelings in such wonderful displays of art."
- 2467 DE
- King Hinash is born.
- 2488 DE

- 2704 DE
- King Hinash's wife dies in childbirth.
- Needrah, King Hinash's fourth son, is born.
- 2709 DE
- King Hinash pushes established cultural "rules" by marrying a woman of non-D'ni blood. This broader acceptance of "outsiders" leads to the use of more exotic materials in construction, clothing, and jewelry, as well as the introduction of more foreign music and art.
- 2779 DE
- King Hinash dies at the age of 312.
- Needrah takes the throne at the age of 75.
- 2807 DE
- King Needrah commissions his friend from the Guild of Sculptors to create a monument to the discovery of the Book of Birenni.

- Tevahr, an ardent follower of the teachings of the Great King, is born.
- 3065 DE
- Tevahr begins speaking on the failings of D'ni's current religious course, and quickly becomes a very influential man.
- 3077 DE
- Tevahr publicly denounces the religious sects and his people's lack of faith in Yahvo and his laws, upon which their civilization was founded.
- 3081 DE
- King Rakeri attends one of Tevahr's speeches and ended up in a public debate with the orator. Reportedly, Rakeri did not fare well.
- Five days after the debate, Rakeri personally invites Tevahr to the Palace and later that day announces his decision to make Tevahr his main prophet, asking forgiveness for his wrongs, and the wrongs of the Kings before him.
- 3092 DE
- Handheld extrusion technology is unveiled, presumably by the Guild of Stone Masons or the Guild of Mechanists.
- 3100 DE
- Government census data indicate that there are now only 47 sects in existence (down from 2500 DE's count of 2500). Only ten of these have memberships larger than 500.
- 3105 DE
- King Tejara is born.
- 3112 DE
- King Rakeri announces a near-complete reconstruction of the Great Temple, taking advantage of recent extrusion construction technologies and enlisting the hand of Fahlee, one of the greatest painters of the D'ni Renaissance.
- Rakeri also announces that the original line of the Great Zero is accurate and will be honored once again.
- 3123 DE
- The reconstruction of the Great Temple is completed.
- Fahlee, one of the greatest painters of the D'ni Renaissance, passes away six months after the completion of the Temple.
3125 DE – 6249 DE
3125 DE - 3749 DE

- The Palace undergoes significant renovation on Tijara's orders.
- 3279 DE
- The Guild of Writers presents Tejara with the King's Age, widely regarded at the time to be one of the most beautiful and amazing Ages ever written. It would later be discovered that it was commissioned by Tejara himself, and that the two Writers he had ordered to write it "died" mysteriously two weeks after its presentation.
- 3285 DE
- Tejara's oldest brother is imprisoned for the creation of illicit Ages, a charge which he denies vehemently. It would later be learned that Tejara fabricated the charges against him because he believed his brother was giving his wife (or perhaps one of his many "companions") lustful looks.
- 3298 DE
- Tejara orchestrates the "accidental" death of a Guild Master in the Guild of Miners because the man had been in a relationship with one of Tejara's lovers, long before Tejara had even met her.

- 3477 DE
- Ti'amel marries Shama. Many later believed that it was she, not Ti'amel, who made many of the executive decisions after this point in his reign.
- 3500 DE
- Women become eligible for Minor Guild education for the first time in D'ni history. Though they had been allowed to participate in the Minor Guilds before this time (as actresses, etc.), they had never been officially recognized as members.
- Shama pushes to keep women out of the Major Guilds, arguing that a woman's duty was the raising of her children; an ironic stance for someone who seemed to exercise more power as King than the King himself did.
- 3574 DE
- Shama gives birth to Ti'amel's first son, Kedri.
- 3604 DE
- Shama gives birth to Ti'amel's daughter.
- 3654 DE

- 3975 DE
- King Lemashal marries an "outsider" of non-D'ni blood.
- 3995 DE

- 4103 DE
- King Ishek's wife is abducted by inhabitants of the Age of Yimas while she and her husband toured the Age's food facility. The abductors used Linking Books to escape before anyone in the party had a chance to react. Ishek argues that his people should not judge outsiders on the actions of a few radicals, though his words seem to have fallen largely on deaf ears.
- The Yimas holding his wife demanded their own Ages to rule, just as the D'ni ruled them. Ishek, a faithful student of history, took the lessons taught by the Pento War and applied them, sending the Relyimah after a D'ni group that might have been responsible for the kidnapping.
- Records alternatively indicate that The Blood of Yahvo or the Light of D'ni was the group responsible for the kidnapping, and because of the efforts of the Relyimah, Ishek's wife was recovered safely and the conspirators revealed to the public.

Many, however, failed to see this distinction.

Some within the government believe she was a target of one of the numerous factions under the watchful gaze of the Relyimah, which was headed by Faresh. As a result, the Watcher's popularity grows again, sewing the seeds of more philosophical chaos in the years to come.
