Yeesha is Atrus and Catherine's third child, born after Atrus finished writing Releeshahn in approximately 9470 DE (1814 CE), and nicknamed "desert bird" by her parents. Her name means "laughter" in D'ni according to RAWA.

When she was 8, she was taken to the Age of Serenia (which Catherine had written many years before) as part of her education into Writing. While she was there, she learned much about the Serenians' history, culture, and their connection to Dream. Her time there netted her a necklace, which was able to play back audio and visual memories tied to specific locations or objects. At the same time as her education on Serenia was progressing, Atrus and Catherine attempted to reconnect with Sirrus and Achenar, who had been trapped in Prison Ages for 18 years. Sirrus, in a bid to learn how to Write Ages and eventually rule over the D'ni, captured Yeesha after escaping his prison. His plan was foiled, however, and Yeesha was returned to her family unharmed.

In End of Ages, we learn of Yeesha's journey. Seeking to find her purpose, Yeesha left Tomahna and ventured into the Cleft, later into D'ni itself. In time, however, she grew mad and desperate for companionship, and began talking to animals in her lonliness. One day, she entered the Library of Ae'gura, and found a mysterious old man whom she befriended. This man, she learned, was Calam, a former Writer and a survivor of the fall of D'ni.

Although their clashing views caused them to argue often (Calam being more traditional while Yeesha questioned the D'ni way constantly), Calam taught Yeesha everything the D'ni knew about the Art. But Yeesha, being inquisitive as she was, began to ask deep questions about D'ni and the Art that Calam did not know the answers too. Together, they searched for the answers, and discovered the Bahro and the Tablet along the way. Once they found this, Yeesha was convinced that Calam was the Grower. Her dreams were shattered, however, when Calam was murdered, and Yeesha killed the murderer.

Eventually, Yeesha met the Bahro themselves, and learned even further with them. She learned of their magical powers, which she tried to duplicate, and learned of their burden and long suffering. In time, when explorers came to D'ni, she taught them about the Bahro and what they could to do help them. She took it upon herself to become the Grower and release the Tablet, but she soon fell into its trap of pride, and the Tablet became off limits to her. Yeesha despaired, seeing how she had failed her only chance to free the Bahro.

One night, she had a dream that she was walking through a cave holding the seed of D'ni itself. There were two holes in the cave: one on the floor, where she could see the D'ni cavern, and one on the ceiling, where she could see the stars. The voice of the Maker asked her in which hole would she plant the seed. Not knowing the answer, she asked him for advice. He responded that she shouldn't place it in the bottom hole, because that was the easy way of the past, and she shouldn't throw it up into the top hole, because that was for another to do. Waking up from the dream, Yeesha realized its meaning: that she needed the help of another to fulfill the prophecy and free the Bahro. She needed another person to move the Tablet.

Yeesha has spoken of and illustrated her ability to Write things that had previously been thought impossible. She learned much from her mother and father, and in time her knowledge even surpassed theirs. She seems to have only narrowly avoided falling into the same trap of power and pride that claimed her brothers, Sirrus and Achenar, as well as her grandfather, Gehn, and seems to still be battling with the effects of it. She also seems to be intent on preventing others from falling into that trap as well.

The details of her objective in Uru are still somewhat unclear. We know that she wishes to return a race called the Bahro to D'ni, using those who are drawn to the Cleft to aide her in her task, and taking the same opportunity to educate those who venture into D'ni in the downfalls of the D'ni themselves. However, why she wishes to return the Bahro (or "The Least" as she sometimes calls them) to D'ni remains to be seen, and her claims that the Bahro somehow "belong" in D'ni have yet to be substantiated.

After her failure to rebuild D'ni and restore the Bahro in the events of 2003 through 2004, she called upon the assistance of a single individual (at this time it is unclear whether it was the Stranger or an explorer) in 2005 to release the Bahro from their enslavement to a device called the Tablet. By so doing, she was finally able to complete the task that had been laid before her many years previously, and returned to Releeshahn with her father. It is uncertain whether she remained there, or whether she will once again appear in the Cavern.

A prophet called The Watcher wrote of one called the desert bird in his books, entitled Words. He called this desert bird The Grower, and this person would have the ability to control time and space, link without Books, and grow the new Tree of D'ni. We now know this person is Yeesha. A single phrase in Words also seems to indicate that Yeesha has, or will have, a daughter of her own. Unfortunately, we don't have any information about this beyond the line in Words.
