Atrus is a member of the D'ni civilization, and is also descended from Ti'ana (Anna) and Keta (Gehn's wife), both surface-dwellers, which makes him only 1/4 D'ni and 1/2 Human. He is a very noble person, and very honest as well.

Born on the surface to Gehn and Keta, he was left with his grandmother Anna until he was 14, when Gehn came and took him back to the underground city of D'ni. Later, as punnishment for trying to escape his father, he was locked into a room at the base of the island mansion K'veer, where Gehn had lived since he returned to D'ni.

Atrus managed to trap his father on one of Gehn's Ages, Riven, with the assistance of his grandmother and Catherine, a Rivenese inhabitant. Atrus later married Catherine, and together, they had two sons, Sirrus and Achenar, who later betrayed him in their quest for riches and power. Because of their scheme, he was trapped in the room on K'veer for several months before a mysterious stranger discovered his missing Myst Linking Book and rescued him.

Later, Atrus abandoned Myst because of the memories it held, and began a quest to rescue the remaining D'ni who had escaped the downfall of the great empire. Together, they worked to rebuild their civilization on a new Age which Atrus had written, called Releeshahn. Atrus then moved to a new home on Earth which he called Tomahna. There, he and Catherine had their new daughter, Yeesha.

Years later, with Catherine dead and Yeesha gone to find her destiny, Atrus began to despair. Once again, he was left in the same state he was when his life began in the Cleft: useless, yet waiting for more. In his old age, Atrus finally began to get wrapped up in the ancient prophecies which he so wholeheartledly rejected, and realized the whole truth about the restoration of D'ni and his own burden.

Finally, after the Bahro were released from their slavery, Atrus, now an old, dying man relying on a staff to walk, was reunited with Yeesha in his Age of Releeshahn. He spent the last of his days there in peace.
